Costa Rica in Numbers

The Development Observatory of the University of Costa Rica presents a compendium of national statistics "Costa Rica in figures" for the period 1985-2013. Part of the digital initiative of the Development Trends of Costa Rica, aimed at providing statistics on four pillars: environmental, social, economic and institutional. With it seeks to contribute to the analysis of the national situation in the different areas of interest and support decision making by providing historical data to see behaviors and trends of different variables.

This compendium includes data for 1985, 1995 and 2000 onwards corresponding to over a hundred indicators and variables and their breakdowns from multiple sources of information detailed in the document due.

In the environmental axis figures on water, forest, land use and biodiversity are presented. The social part emphasizes in population and employment characteristics and aspects of the Costa Rican education and public safety. The economic section is mainly domestic production, foreign trade and economic indicators. In the institutional axis stand the actions of the Constitutional Court, the Legislature and the Ombudsman's Office.
The data presented correspond to those available for the study period, but failed to update some variables because of the lack of data for some years and not update them.

The Development Observatory extends a thank you to the institutions and personnel responsible for providing information. Also it calls for awareness of the importance of continuing with collecting and updating data representing the input given to possible studies, research and as a reference for decision makers.
