Según el Censo Nacional de Población y Vivienda del 2000, elaborado por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos de Costa Rica, se registraron 63.876 personas indígenas, representando el 1,7% de la población del país, mientras que en el Censo del 2011, se identificaron 104.143 mil personas autodefinidas como indígenas, las cuales constituyen un 2,4% de la población total del país.
